“At other swim schools we tried you could tell staff were there for work, but at Big Blue you can tell staff are happy to be there! They all make such an investment in kids.” -Nicole S.
“We just finished our eighth lesson at Big Blue and I am so incredibly impressed with the progress my son has made. He’s a very risk adverse kid and we were so nervous about him taking lessons even though we know he needs to learn how to swim. At his first lesson, he was so nervous that he refused to even get in the pool. The leadership team at Big Blue were so kind and let us reschedule our trial lesson with a 1:1 instructor. For the first few weeks, Kelly did an incredible job encouraging our little guy to get in the pool. After the 3rd lesson, he really began to flourish. He’s enthusiastically participating in every activity, has loved every single instructor, and is so proud of himself. He’s finally letting the instructors hold him in an assisted back float! This kid has never even let us lay him on his back in the tub with a half inch of water. We can’t recommend them enough!” -Liz W.

Swimming in Concord: Water Safety Concerns Parents Should Know
Families love swimming in Concord, whether it’s at a local pool, splash pad, or one of the nearby lakes. These experiences keep kids active, social, and smiling, but every water setting comes with its own considerations.
From busy public pools to natural open water, knowing what to expect helps parents feel prepared. With a little awareness and planning, you can ensure your child enjoys the water safely while making lasting memories.
Public Pools, Splash Pads & Parks: Fun with Extra Precautions
Families in Concord have plenty of ways to cool off, from the Great Wolf Lodge Water Park to the exciting Camp T.N. Spencer Pool and the kid-friendly splash pad at Village Park in nearby Kannapolis. These spots offer hours of fun, but busy environments can also present challenges.
- Crowded Settings: When many families are present, it becomes more challenging to keep track of children, increasing the risk of slips or wandering into more hazardous areas.
- Exciting Features: Slides and wave pools offer big excitement but can be overwhelming for younger or newer swimmers.
- Tricky Surfaces: Even shallow play areas may have slick spots or sudden jets that catch kids off guard.
- Stay Close: Lifeguards support the environment—but nothing replaces a parent’s watchful, nearby presence.
Closer to Home: Staying Safe in Private and Shared Pools
While swimming in Concord at public venues is fun, many families also rely on backyard or nearby complex pools for quick water play. These familiar settings still carry safety risks that parents should know:
- Limited Lifeguard Support: Most residential or community pools lack lifeguards, so attentive adult supervision is key.
- Safety Barriers Matter: North Carolina law requires pool fences at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates to prevent unsupervised access.
- Slippery Perimeters: Pool decks and ledges can stay be and dangerous, increasing fall risk.
- Variable Water Temperatures: Even on hot days, pool water may feel unexpectedly cool, which can surprise younger swimmers.
- Unseen Obstacles: Submerged toys a child may try to grab or uneven surfaces can pose risks.
Lakes and Reservoirs Near Concord: What Families Should Keep in Mind
Many families head to Lake Norman, Badin Lake, or other nearby reservoirs for warm-weather fun, from swimming to splashing along the shoreline. These open-water spots are a great way to spend the day, but they come with different conditions than pools or splash pads. Keeping a few key points in mind can help make the experience both safe and enjoyable:
- Sudden Depth Changes: Uneven lake bottoms can lead to unexpected drop-offs—always keep children within reach and everyone should wear properly fitted life jackets.
- Water Traffic: Powerboats and jet skis cruise freely. Stick to designated swim zones to reduce the risk of collisions.
- Cool Water Temperatures: Even on warm days, not all lake areas can be heated; cooler water can lead to tiring muscles or cramps faster than expected.
- Weather Variability: Open water can shift quickly—storms, strong winds, or wakes can create unsafe conditions in an instant.
- Life Jacket Reminder: As the CDC highlights, “Life jackets should be used by children for all activities while in and around natural water.”
- Algal Blooms: Remember to check for swim advisories for natural bodies of water. Algal blooms can be toxic.
Rivers & Streams: Staying Safe Around Swift Currents
Families sometimes visit places like Riverpark at Cooleemee Falls, just a short drive from Concord, where kids can splash in shallow areas or explore the riverbanks. While these outings are a great way to connect with nature, rivers and streams call for extra awareness:
- Swift Flow: Even knee-deep water can move quickly enough to make kids lose their footing.
- Submerged Hazards: Rocks, branches, and debris may be hidden under the surface.
- Rising Water Levels: Heavy rain upstream can raise water levels suddenly, creating new risks.
- Cool Temperatures: River water often remains chilly year-round, which can cause kids to tire or become too cold more quickly.
Seasonal Weather Issues to Watch in Concord
Outdoor fun is an integral part of life in the Carolinas, and families enjoy swimming in Concord throughout much of the year. Still, the changing seasons bring conditions that can affect safety around water:
- Sudden Storms: Pop-up thunderstorms are common in the summer and can turn a fun afternoon at the pool or lake into a hazardous situation.
- Rising Waters: Heavy rainfall can quickly swell creeks or streams, especially after storms.
- Weather Risks: High humidity and long days in the sun or cold water can leave kids tired or dehydrated without frequent breaks.
By planning for weather shifts, parents can help kids enjoy the water while staying safe.
Health and Safety Concerns in Local Water
Whether it’s a day at the pool or time by a nearby lake, families should know that water quality and exposure can sometimes bring extra considerations. A few things to keep in mind include:
- Seasonal Blooms: Some lakes or reservoirs may experience algae growth at certain times of year. It’s best to check local advisories before kids get in the water.
- Ear Health: After swimming, gently drying your ears can reduce the chance of irritation or infections, such as swimmer’s ear.
- Chemical Sensitivity: Pool treatments, such as chlorine, can cause mild skin or eye discomfort; rinsing off after lessons or playtime often helps.
By staying aware of these simple factors, parents can help ensure time in the water remains safe and enjoyable.
