Swimming Makes Your Kids Smarter
Study Finds Swim Lessons Benefit Children's Development in the Classroom!
We are firm believers in the amazing benefits of swimming, but what most people do not realize is how beneficial formal swim lessons can be to young, developing minds.
A four-year research study conducted at Griffith University in Australia from 2009-2013 reported that “children who participate in early swimming are achieving a range of milestones earlier than normal populations.” The study, entitled “Early-Years Swimming: Adding Capital to Young Australians” not only concluded that 3,4, and 5 year-old children who participated in formal swim lessons not only performed better in physical skills, but it also found that these same children scored significantly higher in literacy, numeracy, mathematical reasoning, visual motor skills, and oral expression.
The lead author, Professor Robyn Jorgensen, said, “It does appear that children who participate in swimming are achieving a range of milestones earlier than normal populations.”
Jorgensen goes on to comment that there were significant differences between swimmers and the normal population, even when controlling for socio-economic background.
On average, children who participated in swim lessons were over 7 months ahead of their non-swimming peers in motor achievement and around 10 months ahead cognitively and linguistically. It is believed that the increased cross-patterning neuro activity encouraged by swimming, in addition to the tactile stimulation of water, which is 600 times more resistant than air, contribute to an improved overall neural organization.
Wow! How cool is that?
