Top 4 Reasons to Keep Up with Swim Lessons in the Summer

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, and for many families, that means spending time in the water. Whether your family is heading to the beach, lake, waterpark, or pool, it's important to make sure that your children are safe while on vacation. One of the best ways to do that is by taking swimming lessons. Here are 4 reasons why we believe swim lessons are so important for children to continue in the summer months!

Safety First

The #1 reason to take swimming lessons is safety. According to the CDC (2024), drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 in the United States. The CDC also reported "Over 4,500 people died due to drowning each year from 2020–2022, 500 more per year compared to 2019," (2024). With such staggering statistics in mind, formal swimming lessons are more important than ever, and we want as many families as possible to be safe around water.

Drowning is often silent, too. It can happen in an instant and many children do not have the chance to splash their arms or cry for help. Swim lessons can teach children how to swim, propel towards a safe spot, and stay afloat in an emergency. By acquiring these necessary skills, your family will be better prepared to handle any situation that arises in the water.

Build Confidence

We understand swimming can be intimidating, especially for children who are new to the water. To help overcome a fear of water, swim lessons build confidence, by teaching your child the basics of swimming in a safe, fun, and supportive environment. With our experienced, friendly instructors, your child learns that they can do hard things and can conquer whatever they set their minds to! After lessons, children usually feel more comfortable in the water, which can help them enjoy swimming and other water activities even more.

Exercise and Improved Balance

Swimming is a great form of low-impact exercise and can help your child burn some energy, while improving their strength and flexibility. As a result, your child will gain better balance and coordination, which will help them both in the water and in other sports or recreational activities they sign up for later.

Swimming is FUN!

It's no secret that swimming is a great way to cool off on a hot summer day, and learning new skills can be a rewarding experience. Your child may also learn at a young age to associate movement with having fun, and they may even develop a serious love for the sport. At Big Blue Swim School, we teach kids essential swim skills through fun games, songs, and stories, so that they quickly grow excited to come to class.

We know the summer months can be a busy time for the whole family, but we don’t want your child to miss out on fun activities in the water. By continuing your child’s swimming lessons, with plenty of options for weekly, drop-in, or make-up classes, no matter your child's level, you'll be able to make the most of your family’s time in the water while staying safe and healthy this summer!
