Have Some Classic Summer Fun!

Are your kids spending summer vacation indoors, glued to a screen? It can be hard to get ‘em moving, but it’s important. Children and adolescents should get an hour of daily exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

We know swimming is a great exercise — it builds endurance and works every major muscle group while taking it easy on those still-developing joints. But on non-swim days there are a ton of things you can do to get your kids going — and you’ll have fun as a family!

Play a game of hopscotch. Jump rope. Play tag. Kick or throw a ball around. On rainy days you can play musical chairs or set up an obstacle course in the house. Introducing family yoga time is a great way to get a lifetime of exercise no matter where you are. Here is a great PHOTO SLIDE SHOW of moves you can try.

To keep everyone interested, follow each game with a game of follow the leader with each person taking a turn as the leader. With hopscotch, for example, one leader might hop on one foot into each box. The next leader might hope with both feet in each box. The idea is to use the imagination as well as the body.

Getting your family off the couch is especially important for youngsters. Active kids have stronger bones. That’s a great head start for middle age, when their bone density will start decreasing. Increasing bone mineral density during childhood can delay the development of osteoporosis by over a decade, doctors say.

So having fun now can prevent brittle bones later.

Our teachers at Big Blue also fast-track fun and exercise for developing young bodies. We teach efficient swimming techniques so your child gets the most benefit out of each lesson, and we make it a game to amp up the fun.
