What to Do If Your Child Regresses in Swim Lessons

/ Uncategorized

A parent’s guide to understanding swim regression, why it happens, and how to
get your child back on track with confidence.

By Big Blue Swim School

The Short Answer

Swim regression is normal. If your child was kicking confidently last month and is
now refusing to put their face in the water, you are not doing anything wrong.
They are not falling behind for good. Regression is a recognized part of child
development, and it happens in swim lessons for a handful of well-understood
reasons. The path forward is patience, consistency, and a conversation with your
child’s instructor.

What Is Swim Regression?

Swim regression is when a child who was making steady progress in the water
suddenly seems to go backward. That can mean a few different things:

  • They refuse to do something they did easily before, like floating on their back or jumping in from the side
  • They cry at lessons or resist getting in the pool, when they were good before
  • Their technique feels sloppy or inconsistent compared to a few weeks ago
  • They are fearful or clingy, even though their last lesson went well

Any of these situations count as regression. And all of them are common enough
that experienced instructors see them regularly.
